Antral Follicle Count(AFC)

anatomy

Definition

The number of small resting follicles (2-10 mm) visible on baseline transvaginal ultrasound, used to estimate ovarian reserve.

In IVF Treatment

AFC is one of the best predictors of how many eggs can be retrieved during IVF. Along with AMH, it helps guide medication dosing decisions. An AFC of 5-15 is generally considered normal; above 15 may indicate PCOS; below 5 suggests diminished reserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good AFC for IVF?

An AFC of 10-20 follicles is generally associated with a good response to stimulation. An AFC below 5-7 may indicate diminished reserve. However, AFC is just one part of the picture.
