Retrieval Day Guide: What to Expect
The egg retrieval is the biggest milestone of the stimulation phase. Here is exactly what happens on the big day.
⚡️ TL;DR
- •Local-First: Your data stays on your device.
- •Expert-Backed: Content reviewed by fertility specialists.
- •Actionable: Use the TrackMyIVF app to manage these steps.
The Night Before
- Trigger Shot: You must take this at the exact time instructed (usually 36 hours before retrieval).
- Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
The Procedure (15-20 Minutes)
- Prep: You'll change into a gown and get an IV placed.
- Anesthesia: You'll drift off to sleep in seconds.
- Retrieval: The doctor uses an ultrasound-guided needle to aspirate fluid (and eggs) from each follicle.
- The Lab: The embryologist immediately searches the fluid for eggs and counts them.
Recovery
You'll wake up in the recovery room about 30 minutes later. You may feel groggy and have some cramping (like a bad period).

Common Questions
Will I be asleep?
Most clinics use 'twilight sedation' (Propofol). You will be breathing on your own but completely unconscious and pain-free.
Can I drive home?
No. Because of the anesthesia, you must have a responsible adult drive you home. You cannot take an Uber/Lyft alone.
