Corpus Luteum

anatomy

Definition

The temporary endocrine structure in the ovary that forms after ovulation from the remnants of the follicle and produces progesterone and estrogen.

In IVF Treatment

In a natural cycle, the corpus luteum supports the uterine lining for 14 days. In IVF, the egg retrieval disrupts natural corpus luteum function, requiring progesterone supplementation after transfer.
