Definition

The second half of the menstrual cycle, from ovulation to menstruation, during which progesterone is produced to prepare the uterine lining for implantation.

In IVF Treatment

Luteal phase support (progesterone and sometimes estrogen supplementation) is essential after embryo transfer in IVF cycles. Luteal phase defect has been associated with implantation failure.
