Definition

The process by which a blastocyst breaks out of the zona pellucida to allow implantation into the uterine wall.

In IVF Treatment

Hatching typically occurs on Day 5-7. After the embryo hatches, it can make contact with the endometrium and implant. Expanded and hatching blastocysts (grades 5 and 6) are often considered ideal for transfer.
