Tips from the IVF community
These are practical suggestions shared by people who have been through IVF. They are not a substitute for your clinic's guidance.
- The Follistim pen allows precise dose dialing, which can reduce waste from multi-dose vials
- Rotate injection sites each day
- Warming the cartridge slightly in your hands before injecting may improve comfort
- Log your exact dose and time in TrackMyIVF to share with your clinic at monitoring appointments
- It is okay to feel anxious about daily injections. Many people in our community feel the same way.

Learn about TrackMyIVFFrequently Asked Questions
How is Follistim different from Gonal-F?
Both Follistim and Gonal-F contain only FSH but are made through slightly different manufacturing processes (follitropin beta vs. follitropin alfa). In practice, they are used interchangeably in many protocols. Your clinic may choose one based on your insurance coverage, cost, or their preference.
How does the Follistim pen work?
The Follistim pen uses cartridges and allows you to dial in an exact dose in IU. Your nurse will show you how to load the cartridge, prime the pen, and inject. Always follow your clinic training, and call with questions.
What happens if I take too much Follistim?
Taking too much FSH can increase the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) and over-recruitment of follicles. Your doctor monitors your response with ultrasound and bloodwork and adjusts doses accordingly. Never change your dose without speaking to your clinic first.
Does Follistim need to be refrigerated?
Yes, store it in the refrigerator before opening. Once opened, it can be kept at room temperature for up to 28 days. Never freeze it.
